SingularityNET, as a global leader in the fields of beneficial, decentralized AI and AGI, social robotics, and AI plus blockchain implementation, is regularly sought out to provide thought leadership across a range of critical topics on emerging technologies:
In a landmark event for the AI community, we hosted the Beneficial General Intelligence (BGI) Summit & Unconference 2024 in Panama City, Panama. Presented by SingularityNET, TrueAGI, and HyperCycle, the Summit convened a worldwide community of industry leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, media, academics, and global leading voices in AI like the luminary George Gilder, Co-Founder of Discovery Institute, to establish valuable connections and discuss how to guide AGI governance and leverage generally intelligent machines to support ethical, social, and economic progress.
The event kicked off on February 27th with a highly anticipated keynote by SingularityNET Founder and CEO, Dr. Ben Goertzel. In his address, Dr. Goertzel presented strong arguments for the potential of achieving human-level Artificial General Intelligence within years, followed by superintelligence (ASI) shortly thereafter. He called for immediate action to increase the likelihood of a beneficial outcome from this transformative AGI revolution.
With Big Tech companies like Meta and IBM starting to advocate for an open-science approach to AI development, Dr. Goertzel acknowledged the importance of open-source AI for transparency and collaboration. However, he signaled that open-source code alone is not sufficient: Open source code is great but if you are open sourcing your code but the data needed to make that code do anything is proprietary and the software needed to run that code usefully costs a hundred million dollars, then the fact that the code is open source is of less use than one might expect.
Therefore, Dr. Goertzel proposed one of the potential alternative paths to AI development, deployment, and governance, stressing the need for additional guiding principles to avoid scenarios where a small number of companies or government agencies have excessive control over the future of humanity. Specifically, he advocated for decentralized deployment and governance models to prevent the concentration of power and promote democratic control.
Additionally, he emphasized the importance of open-ended cognitive approaches to AGI, prioritizing architectures like OpenCog Hyperon, the new version of the OpenCog system. He also underlined the critical need for ethical data practices, advocating for the use of ethically sourced and managed data to train AI models. Finally, he highlighted the importance of inclusivity, ensuring that the benefits of transformative technologies are accessible to everyone.
Building upon the themes outlined by Dr. Goertzel, the Summit delved into key areas critical for the responsible and beneficial advancement of AGI. Key themes included examining the ethical implications of AGI systems, exploring different AGI architectures, weighing the risks and benefits of AGI self-improvement, analyzing the pros and cons of open-source AGI development, defining evolving notions of benefit, and understanding the influence of global power structures on AGI evolution.
Current AI alignment approaches do not stem from a deep understanding of how to build a society capable of perpetuating itself into the future in which we coexist with AI and with each other and life on Earth, but mostly from a perspective that is about emulating good behavior.
Joscha Bach, AI Strategist, Liquid AI
Summit discussions also addressed the impact of AGI ownership on ethical outcomes, the role of human consciousness in shaping AGI, strategies for maximizing beneficial AGI development, the ability of AGI to embody human ethics, aligning the pace of regulation with AGI progress, fostering a positive feedback loop between humans and AGI, balancing corporate and national interests, and proactively preventing regulatory capture.
SingularityNET COO Janet Adams took the stage to discuss the rapidly evolving regulatory landscape for AI. Drawing on her experience overseeing regulatory change in the banking sector, she emphasized the potential for catastrophic failures if AI systems lack robust governance. Those of us leading this AI technology revolution have a ginormous responsibility in our hands to ensure that nobody is caused distress, she stressed.
Janet also highlighted the unprecedented global momentum toward raising ethical standards through AI regulation, noting a particular focus on fairness and de-biasing. She discussed the transformative potential of AI to expose and address hidden biases within organizations, seeing it as a catalyst for positive change: I see AI as a tremendous beneficial force for humanity and one of its gifts is bringing us all to common standards of fairness to diversity to inclusion to transparency to respect for human rights.
On Day 2, SingularityNET Chief AI Alchemist Dr. Mihaela Ulieru delivered a thought-provoking keynote that challenged the status quo. She drew parallels to the ancient concept of Moloch, a symbol of systems that demand sacrifice for the benefit of the powerful. Dr. Ulieru argued that modern society is driven by similar perverse incentives, where corporations, governments, and individuals prioritize short-term gains at the expense of long-term well-being. We are a commodity for advertisers and food for the cannibalistic industrial complex because of these incentives, she declared.
Dr. Ulieru explained how decentralization, guided by the right incentives, could disrupt this destructive pattern and create a more equitable world. She called for a fundamental shift from a game of economic incentives to one based on cultivating wisdom, building relationships, and aligning with the laws of nature. Her keynote served as a powerful call to action, urging the audience to reimagine the rules of society and harness the potential of AGI to usher in a new era of human flourishing.
Following the flagship BGI Summit (February 2728), the Unconference took place from February 29th to March 1st. This participant-driven format aimed to foster in-depth discussions and collaborative exploration of specific topics. Attendees were empowered to propose ideas and lead parallel working sessions centered around common themes. Key themes included developing a voluntary Constitution and Governance Framework for open-source AGI projects, exploring a Gl
